2. One stop shop

We don't just build you a website. At FastNet we also provide a copywriting service, photography, graphics, online shopping and promotion - everything you need in one place.

3. Our customers love us

Testimonials and feedback tell us that people love the websites we build because they are clear, attractive, easy to use - and bring visitors back for more.  Google Analytics figures independently confirm that visitors to FastNet-built websites stay longer and read more pages than comparable websites.  The average website can expect 4 pageviews per visitor- FastNet websites have a 9-page viewing average.  Read some testimonials here.

4.Your customers love us

'Bounce rate' may not be a term that means much to you, but it is the hidden measure of a good website.  Visitors who leave a website within the first few seconds are said to have bounced.  The industry-measured average is a 50% bounce rate - FastNet websites average below 10%.  Why? 90% of visitors like what they see when they land on one of our sites.

5. Value for money and no hidden extras

FastNet is also fantastic value for money and has a clear pricing policy with no unpleasant hidden costs.  Plus we can add great extras like online shopping, news feeds or video, all at the same great value.

6. Loud and proud

FastNet is the home of organic communication.  If you want to make the most of being online we can connect your website to twitter, facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Vine and google+  - and help you make the most of email marketing, pinterest, reddit and the whole online world.

Hosting your Website?

In the next article are reviews and links to web building programmes such as Wordpress and Blogger which offer a one-stop website building programme with relatively easy to use templates and free hosting (an internet address where people can find your site).  There are also less extensive but much easier to use web-build programmes such as Wix,Weebly and Zoho - reviewed there too. But first, let's begin at the beginning with self build.

Hosts
The content of websites is seldom kept on your computer but actually lies in electronic form elsewhere - on a host computer.  So if you want to self-build using Dreamweaver or a similar web-building package you will need to find a host for your new website.  This is a space for it to exist in cyberspace.  The services mentioned above come with free hosting but if you do want the challenge and freedom to build and host yourself, then there are some free host sites listed and reviewed at bestfreewebsites.  The disadvantage of free hosts is they can be slow to download for your visitors, and can be unreliable (ie disappear occasionally) and lose you visitors.  Be warned too that many free hosts will charge indirectly by putting adverts on your site, which can spoil the look.

So if you choose to build a website independently and need a more reliable host, they generally charge a fee for holding your website (anywhere from 40 to 150 Euro per year plus).  In return you get sufficient space for your content and an uninterrupted, advert free service.

Domain names
A domain name - a virtual postal address for visitors to find your site, will also provide the url, or uniform resource locator, of your subsequent pages and posts.  Many self build sites (including Wix, Wordpress, blogger etc) come with free domain names, but they are usually a sub-domain of the larger company and therefore not so good to remember, clumsy for advertising and not so visible to the internet search engines.  If your site is a hobby or family site, then that is fine.  But if you have a business or larger community project to promote you really need a distinct domain name that is your web identity.  So when a free website building service asks you to get a domain name or you choose to use a better address yourself, you should build that cost into your overall budget.  To get that you will need to go shopping.

Cost of a domain?
Costs can be high, but shouldn't be.  Some cheap to build sites make money on domains or hosting costs, so check out the overall prices of all three before committing yourself.  Some can charge 50 to 150 euro for the privilege of a domain name, but a fair price now is about 10 dollars per year (9 euro).  The market leader and a popular place to shop for value is Go Daddy which offers good rates and reliability.

Blogger Tips: Creating and linking a new or "invisible" post

You have created a full website and you want to add a new post but not to replace the front page, or you want to draw attention to a previous post that is no longer clearly visible to visitors.  How to create it and how to add it?

There are several easy solutions on blogger, all with their advantages in terms of aesthetics, layout and visibility.

Create a new post

If you haven't already, first create the post and its content. Sign into the dashboard and select the large pencil symbol visible in most menus.  Add the text and a title and any photos, and then at the point of publishing it (preview first to be sure it looks good) select the Schedule option in the right hand menu and select Set date and time - choosing any date earlier than the current front page of your website.  This will ensure that your new post will not replace the front page.

Also (this is optional but is an opportunity to make it more searchable) choose a four or five word permalink (words separated by hyphens) to describe the article using the most essential key words.  Add these to the custom permalink section.

Then press publish in the top menu.  Next find the url of the post you want to link to.  Go to the list of posts in the main menu.  Select view for the post you have just created (or the previous post you want to highlight), and copy its url (Uniform Resource Locator, meaning its unique internet address) from the bar at the top of your screen. (Alternatively you can find the url by right clicking your mouse and selecting the view page info option and then highlighting and copying the Address line).  You now need to add this url to somewhere on your website.

Where to link the url?

To existing pages or posts
You can simply add the url to text of an existing visible pages or post as an ordinary link. Don't forget to signpost clearly what it is readers will find if they click that link.

Add it to the pages tabbed at the top of your website
You might want this new post to be a key tab at the top of your website.  To add it to these page tabs go to the page menu and select new page.  Of the two options select web address - this will give the option of adding the url and a new short page title that will become the new tab.  Add you url and name and press save.

Add it to a gadget added to the sidebar or footer

Or you could add this url link to one or more of a range of gadgets available from the layout menu gadgets list.

Visit the layout page and click add gadget.  The best is a link list gadget to which your new page/post can be added as a labeled option together with a good title (follow the instructions in the gadget)  Alternatively for better visibility and to attract attention to it, use an image gadget.  Again select this gadget and follow the instructions. Make sure the picture you use is the right size to fit the sidebar where it is to be placed.

The width of your picture should be a little narrower (10 pxels or so) than the width of your sidebar.  Use a photo image package like gimp (free) or snagit or photo editor if you need to edit your photo size. You can use the shrink to fit option before publishing the image which works fine if the image is close in size, but it takes a little longer to upload and can look messy.   Before publishing the image make sure to add the url of your new page.

Once created these gadgets can be moved to any location in the sidebars by dragging and saving.

Use the pre-formatted Popular Posts gadget
Posts will be added automatically to the popular posts gadget which can also be added to your sidebar or footer using the add gadget menu.  They will appear on your website if the post in question gets enough traffic to make the list.  This can also carry a snippet of info about the post and a small picture from it - making it more visible and attractive to visitors.

The gadget helpfully alllows you to choose how many post appear, and whether as just titles,  or a snippet (first sentence or so) and an image.

Done.
